Who doesn’t love attending a medical conference in Miami? The 2023 South Beach Symposium did not disappoint. The cutting-edge presentations by leading experts in aesthetic and medical dermatology were above and beyond the lure of the location. The conference focused on clinical applications of new devices, medications, and practices pertinent to skincare and anti-aging, skin conditions, and dermatologic diseases. Many novel treatments that interrupt inflammatory processes have emerged in the treatment landscape that merit healthcare practitioners’ attention to give better options to their patients.

A key feature in the anti-aging/rejuvenation space is a shift away from surgery to the use of devices that target even the smallest areas with lasers and methods using radio frequency, either hot or cold, that achieve excellent results with minimal downtime and no surgery. Another hot topic is skincare products that use exosomes (extracellular vesicles generated by all cells that carry nucleic acids, proteins, lipids, and metabolites). These new agents act as mediators of near and long-distance intercellular communication in health and disease and affect various aspects of cell biology. New patient segments were also a focus of the meeting with top thought leaders sharing technologies, techniques, and treatment in Millennial, post-menopausal, and LGBTQ+ patients.

The second part of the meeting focused on the latest developments in more commonly encountered skin conditions like acne, psoriasis, rosacea alopecia areata, and atopic dermatitis. New products for acne have recently become available that have considerably broadened the treatment landscape, providing safe and effective care for common conditions that can affect the psyche of a patient so profoundly. New psoriasis treatments examined topical steroids versus novel non-steroidals that give healthcare professionals choices and address patient concerns. Leading experts also highlighted JAK inhibitors in dermatology and the most recent FDA expansion of oral JAK inhibitors in adolescents. Real-time live procedures and cadaver workshops rounded out the program. A truly comprehensive program that afforded all attendees the opportunity to network and deep dive into these new trends.
